It is for the recruitment of Staff to multiple posts. The posts are in Ministries, Departments, Institutions, Subordinate Offices and Organisations of the Government of India for various Group B and Group C posts.

The SSC CGL is the second most Competitive Exam after UPSC. The Exam is conducted in 3 Tiers. Tier I and Tier II are compulsory for all categories of the posts. Only those Candidates who qualify in all the papers separately and in the aggregate of Tier II would be eligible for Tier III Exam. Exam Pattern:

The Exam is conducted in the following 3 Tiers:

  • Tier I: Computer-Based Objective Type Preliminary Examination
  • Tier II: Computer-Based Objective Type Advanced Examination
  • Tier III: Pen and Paper Mode (Descriptive Paper)/ Computer Proficiency Test/ Skill Test (wherever applicable)/ Document Verification

Tier-I – Computer Based Objective Type Preliminary Examination: The written exam will consist of Objective Type papers of 1 hour for all. The subjects involve General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, English Comprehension.
Tier-I Exam is mandatory for all the posts and its’ marks are added for further processes as well. If you do not clear cut-off of Tier I Exam then you will not be eligible for Tier II. Below table shows the section wise breakup of no. of questions and marks in SSC CGL Tier I exam

Tier-II – Computer Based Objective Type Advanced ExaminationTier II exam consists of two Papers (Paper-I and Paper-II) of 2 hours each.  The two papers are conducted in a single day, Paper-I being Quantitative Aptitude and Paper-II being English Language and Comprehension.

Tier-III – Personality Test cum Interview / Computer Proficiency Test / Skill Test (wherever applicable) / Document Verification: Only the Candidates obtaining qualifying marks in the Written Examination prescribed by the Commission will be called for the Skill Test. The exam conducting body will fix the qualifying standards/ requirements in the skill test for different categories of candidates. The candidates need to have a minimum data entry speed of 8000 key impressions per hour. The matter will be transcribed by computer only.


Candidates applying for their respective courses need to have a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognised university while applying for the Exam. The Candidate must be between 18 and 32 Years (depending upon the Post Applied for) as of 1st August of the test-taking year. The application fee is applicable for all except women candidates, candidates who belong to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Physically Handicapped, and ex-Servicemen eligible for reservation are exempted from paying application fees.

Age Eligibility according to Posts: 1. For Post of Sub Inspector in Central Bureau of Narcotics: 18 to 25 Years 2. For Posts of Assistant in Central Vigilance Commission/ Ministry of Railway/ Ministry of External Affairs/ AFHQ/ Other Ministries/ Departments/ Organisations; Inspector of Income Tax/ Central Excise/ Preventive Officer/ Examine/ Posts/ Divisional Accountant/ Central Bureau of Narcotics; Auditor in Offices under C&AG/ Offices under CGDA/ Offices under CGA & others; Accountant/ Junior Accountant in Offices under C&AG/ Offices under CGA & others; Senior Secretariat Assistant/ Tax Assistant in CBDT: 18 to 27 Years

  • Assistant Section Officer (Central Secretariat Service):20 to 30 Years
  • Assistant in Intelligence Bureau: 21 to 27 Years
  • Assistant Enforcement Officer (Directorate of Enforcement, Department of Revenue)/ Assistant Audit Officer (Indian Audit & Accounts Department under CAG): up to 30 Years
  • Statistical Investigator Grade II: up to 32 Years

Educational Qualification:

  1. For Compiler: Bachelor’s Degree from any recognized University with Economics or Statistics or Mathematics as a compulsory or elective subject.
  2. For Statistical Investigator Grade –II: Bachelor’s Degree in any subject from recognized university or Institute with at least 60% in Mathematics at the 12th Standard level or Bachelor’s degree in any subject with Statistics as one of the subjects at degree level.
  3. All other Posts: Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized University or equivalent.
  4. For the post of Assistant Section Officer (CSS): Candidates need to have computer proficiency test qualification
